Chestnut Park sales representative, Fionna Barrington hosted about 45 women in her own garden for a special event in June. The event was to raise funds for the Women’s Shelter in Cobourg. She and her guests enjoyed wine and nibbles in the afternoon with the express purpose of raising money for the organization.
Cornerstone is funded for about 14 beds in Cobourg, but the capacity is 23. It costs about $125 per night for one mother and child (that includes heart, hydro, food, etc.). In 2017 they assisted 61 women and 49 children and turned away over 100. They relied on the local police station to house some of the women during urgent situations. One woman and her child were there for nearly a year as there are not a lot of affordable housing options in Northumberland County. This particular event that Fionna hosted raised enough money to support 85 nights of shelter.
This is Fionna second year hosting this event, and she and her guests raised $11,125 and received another $500 on top of this amount.
